Vice…
Congratulations to me! I’m proud to say that I am now the Vice Chairperson of the Knox County Democratic Party. I won the only contested seat, 16-13, on Tuesday night, and now sit on the board of a local committee in a county that is rather strongly contested between Republicans and Democrats.
Knox county has traditionally been considered a ‘red’ county as Republicans hold most of the county offices, but there are apparently a lot of entrenched Democrats here as well. Mount Vernon’s mayor is a Dem, and half the city council is, as well. The county was strongly in support of Strickland when he was elected, and the primary vote turnout this March showed higher numbers than the previous presidential primary in 2004. We are poised to take a few county positions this time around, and have a very good shot at getting a Democrat elected as our state representative this term. It’s kind of an exciting time to be involved with the party.
I have to say, I’ve always associated with the underdog in situations like this. I like equality, and I like to see entrenched bureaucracies broken up in favor of, well, anything else. Change for the sake of change is good enough for me, because without it, you have no alternative to stagnation. Even when something is running perfectly fine, I like to shake it up a little to see if there are chances for improvement. That’s what I want to do with the Dems.
To that end, I’ve built them a webpage and blog, I’m volunteering for two different campaigns, and I’m going to be a delegate to the state Democratic convention in May. I expect it will be a good time.
